Seneca Aquatic Center

Seneca, KS

New aquatic center design offers community recreation, potential for future expansion

Challenge

Design a modern, entertaining aquatic facility for residents and visitors to Seneca, KS with a variety of family amenities and the potential for future expansion.

Process

SFS held public forums and worked with members of the New Pool Committee over the course of numerous work sessions to develop concept plans for the new facility, with the goal of promoting flexibility, openness, staff efficiency, visibility and potential for expansion.

Solution

The outdoor aquatic center includes a six-lane, 25-yard competition pool, a diving well for 1- and 3-meter diving, water slides, and a leisure pool with zero-depth entry and water play features. A dedicated toddler area is incorporated into the zero-depth pool to provide safety for young swimmers while allowing connectivity to the remainder of aquatic areas. Other elements include shade structures, bermed grass decks, a “floatable walk” and a footbridge that spans the connection between the leisure pool and competition pool. Support buildings are articulated in three separate forms to reduce the structures’ scale and allow light and views between each.
