Olathe Community Center
Design of a 71,000 SF multipurpose community recreation center and outdoor recreation amenities within the 41-acre Stagecoach Park
Challenge
Create a destination for indoor and outdoor recreation within Stagecoach Park for the Olathe community.
Process
After winning a national design competition, the team of SFS and Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture worked closely with the City of Olathe to create a multipurpose community center and park that supports a multitude of physical fitness, athletic, aquatic, lifestyle and outdoor recreation programs offered by the City.
Solution
The 71,000 SF community center, designed by the BRS Architecture/SFS Architecture team, was designed to anchor the 41-acre Stagecoach Park. The architecture complements the existing fabric of the Olathe community and the natural beauty of the park as a composition of wood, stone, and glass under a sweeping curved roof. Indoor recreation components include a gymnasium, running/jogging track, fitness center, aerobics and spinning studios, locker rooms, and a natatorium that includes a beach-style leisure pool, flume slides, lap swimming, rope climbing, and bouldering walls. The center also includes a divisible community room with a patio and catering prep kitchen, children’s party rooms, a child watch area with indoor play, and a spacious lobby social space overlooking the park. Park amenities include an amphitheater, outdoor classrooms, public art, loop trails, boardwalks, the “Great Lawn”, and park shelters overlooking restored prairie and ponds.
