Modern academic facility that integrates multimedia technology for dynamic learning environment

Challenge

Design a modern, state-of-the-art academic facility to house MU’s prestigious national journalism program, giving students, faculty and staff access to fully integrated multimedia technologies as part of a dynamic teaching and learning environment.

Process

The SFS design team worked closely with University of Missouri Journalism School representatives and the campus architect to determine project goals, including functional needs, specialized technology requirements and aesthetic aspects.

Solution

Lee Hills Hall offers students an all-digital newsroom, several design labs, a photography editing suite, lecture halls, seminar rooms, classrooms, faculty offices, conference rooms and lounges. The 40,000 SF facility is home of the Columbia Missourian newspaper, Vox magazine, the IPI Global Journalist, and the Missourian’s digital edition, EmPRINT. The facility’s cutting-edge communications systems include a token ring network with category-five cabling, fiber optics between floors and across campus, bay network routing, WAN microwave link and digital satellite communications. Located on the edge of the university’s historic red campus, selected materials complement the existing structures.
