Platte County Law Enforcement Center

Platte City, MO

Justice center relieves overcrowding, houses all county justice-related agencies

Challenge

Design a modern law enforcement center that securely houses detainees and creates a county government complex.

Process

Programming, planning and complete architectural services were provided by an association between WRS Architects, Inc. and SFS. SFS provided 100 percent of the justice planning and 50 percent of the A/E services, working closely with Platte County representatives and WRS to ensure a highly coordinated, successful project process.

Solution

The new center 78,000 SF center is located adjacent to the existing courthouse and county administration building, creating a county government complex. A centralized entry gives the complex a complementary new image, eases public wayfinding and creates a common security checkpoint. The facility provides 123 medium and maximum custody beds, a 12-bed work release unit, complete detention support facilities, the Platte County Sheriff’s Department, and a communications center for the Sheriff’s Department and surrounding community. Matching bricks, similar details and fenestration proportions respect the existing courthouse architecture. Jail space vacated in the existing courthouse was renovated to create a new courtroom, jury assembly room and court clerk office space.
