Laura Burkhalter

Laura grew up on a farm that has been in her family for over a century, and raised cattle to help pay for part of her college education. She chose to focus her career on design because she wanted to help create meaningful and functional spaces for people to live, work and play. Laura loves to make things, and is usually in the middle of multiple craft projects. She’s also very active in her beloved historic neighborhood, Southmoreland, home to some of Kansas City’s most treasured institutions.

Tim Cummins

Tim’s favorite part of being an architect is figuring out how to make things real . . . taking on wild ideas and coming up with ways to actually make them work in the real world.  Detailing and putting buildings together on paper, and then working on through with the contractor to completion . . . making it real, and making the owner and occupants happy and proud.

Jazmin’s career in architecture was inspired by her family’s work in commercial and residential construction. The experiences she shared alongside her father have influenced the way she thinks about and perceives space - she firmly believes that architecture and design have the power to effect positive change in our built environment. Apart from architecture and design, Jazmin’s interests center on graphic design, illustration, architectural photography, cycling, and spending time with family and close friends.

He is very adept at BIM and with other design tools that help to facilitate the design and documentation processes. He has wanted to be an architect for as long as he can remember. He has always been fascinated by the city and the built environment - believing the beauty, science, and engineering of a city is a reflection of the human spirit. And done well, the architecture of cities, buildings and art can propel community and the human spirit in a way that no other industry can, improving lives both individually and collectively. Asher is a Kansas City transplant who has quickly and wholeheartedly embraced the city’s culinary, cultural and urban offerings.

Carol Martin Tracy

Associate; Director of Marketing

Carol has 25 years of experience positioning, promoting and growing business. She has focused her career in the AEC industry, where she thrives on the continual pursuit of new projects. As Director of Marketing, Carol is responsible for strategic planning and the implementation of business development, marketing, public relations and community engagement activities that support the SFS strategic plan. Her work in the AEC industry aligns with Carol’s interests in current events and community development. Keeping a finger on the pulse of what’s going on in the world and translating that to opportunities for the firm is a challenge she embraces. Outside the office, Carol is busy raising a family, cheering on her favorite sports teams, and shopping (or, as she likes to think about it: doing her part to keep the economy going).

Creativity and coffee are just two of the many reasons Mary Beth Vickery enjoys going to work each day. A member of SFS’ marketing team for more than 15 years, she brings two decades of experience in the architecture/engineering industry to her role developing strategic marketing proposals in collaboration with SFS architects. A St. Louis native, she has a soft spot for local favorite Ted Drewes frozen custard; in Kansas City, she enjoys seeing the city’s many fountains begin flowing each spring. Mary Beth is a frequent volunteer with area charitable organizations, and brings this same spirit of community involvement to her work at SFS.

Derek McMurray

When Derek McMurray joined SFS, he was attracted to the firm’s design principles, and its “openness and collaborative environment.” As a Project Designer , Derek has brought his 12 years of creative experience and 2-D and 3-D digital design media expertise to a variety of projects, though his favorites are designs that embrace the natural environment and provide integrated indoor/outdoor spaces. A native of McPherson, Kansas, Derek enjoys reconnecting with family during visits home; in Kansas City, he connects with friends via summertime beers on the porch. As a devotee of sustainable agriculture and locally grown foods, Derek has been known to push the limit of ‘local’ with his own homemade sausage, sauerkraut and beer. His personal philosophy is equally elemental: “Give and expect respect. Be nice. Laugh.”

Patti Kangethe

Administrative Assistant

Patti Kangethe’s approach to work – and life – is simple: “To have joy, share it!” Patti brings this outlook to her role as SFS administrative assistant, along with a passion for design (she is an artist and sculptor) and her invaluable support for her colleagues on initiatives large and small. Outside of work, Patti volunteers with charitable and arts organizations locally, and is known for taking cookies to fire stations (including the SFS-designed Fire Station No. 19 in her old neighborhood). Her description of the SFS staff sounds a lot like Patti herself: “creative, respectful, thoughtful people who work beyond their own boundaries.”

Joe Klinkenborg

IT Administrator

IT Administrator, Joe Klinkenborg takes pride in the two networks he has built from scratch since starting at SFS – and his outstanding t-shirt collection. Joe brings more than a decade of IT experience within the architecture industry to his role managing the firm’s technology systems and serving as resident IT guru (he tries not to let the power go to his head, asking only for lunch and the occasional bottled water). Joe enjoys SFS’s atmosphere and his colleagues’ “willingness to help me learn,” though he remains a tireless crusader for them to conserve paper by using the printer less. When not at work, Joe can be found watching movies and dominating local trivia contests.

Education

Diana Pacheco

Office Manager

Diana Pacheco came to SFS “fresh out of school” in 1996 – and stayed. As Office Manager, Diana maintains office policies, records and procedures; oversees administrative staff; serves as a liaison with clients and partners; and generally “puts her best foot forward” to allow SFS to do the same. She attributes her longevity to the firm’s atmosphere and people, though patience may also have played a role in the days before all the office computers had Internet access. Her ongoing contributions to SFS’s smooth operation are summed up best in her professional approach: “Always try your best. If you fail, there’s usually a way to fix it.”

Todd Cowger

As an SFS architectural intern, Todd Cowger performs specific project design and development tasks, including drawings, calculations, and cost estimates. Despite his bold theoretical approach to sustainability (“do not use computers”), in practice, he uses all forms of electronic and personal communication to assist clients and collaborate with various disciplines to ensure that project documents are thoroughly coordinated. Todd brings more than 10 years of experience, a dry wit and a passion for music to his work with SFS.

Kelly Edinger Stindt

Associate

For Kelly Edinger Stindt, Associate, the chance to work on church architecture projects was one of many reasons she joined SFS in 1998. Drawn to light as a design element, she enjoys the “amazing transformation” buildings undergo during renovation or restoration. Kelly’s 20+ years of experience includes diverse project types, project management, preparing building programs, interior space needs planning and schematic design. Her skill at executing design and construction documents that accurately and artistically address building user needs make her an asset on projects, and leave her frequently requesting new file cabinets. Outside of work, Kelly’s trademark passion and enthusiasm are reserved for her family, spending time with her daughters at gymnastics meets, on field trips – or in the car between activities.

Kwame Smith

Associate

Kwame Smith, an associate with SFS, has 13 years of experience working on a wide range of projects, but the first thing he notices when walking into a building isn’t the architecture: it’s the people. His enthusiasm for communicating, listening and solving problems, whether with peers or project team members, leads to successful projects. This focus on people influences his design approach, and he takes particular pride in facilities that, like Kansas City’s Lucile H. Bluford Branch Library, have an “immediate, direct and profound impact” on the communities they serve. Kwame’s combination of creative and technical knowledge spans all phases of design and implementation, and his must-have work tool is the one that allows him to connect with others: e-mail.

Brian Garvey’s attention to architectural detail begins at the door – literally: “A custom pull or unexpected detail can set the stage for what’s inside.” As an SFS associate, his broad-ranging experience spans all aspects of design and construction. Brian thrives on diversity of project types and scales, and the opportunity to play different roles in their creation. Over the span of his architectural career, he has honed his talent for communicating design work graphically through 2-D and 3-D digital media, and a passion for sustainability, in design and in life (“say no” to plastic bags, says Brian). His organized, responsible nature lets him work effectively within each discipline of a project team.

Steve Wise

Principal

Steve Wise, SFS Principal, keeps his professional goals simple – and high: “Focus on efficiency, productivity and client satisfaction, and accomplish in eight hours what would take other people 12 hours.” This outlook, combined with exceptional strength in technical development and management of architectural projects, has made Steve an indispensable team member throughout his 20-year career. His expertise in team communication and coordination makes him a natural liaison between project stakeholders and facilitator of successful outcomes. Conscientious about energy and water use, highly organized (a “quirk,” he claims), and skilled at spotting both unique design details and sloppy construction, Steve’s personal goals say as much as his professional ones: “Continue improving myself as a husband, father, son, brother and friend.”

Mike Shaughnessy

Founding Principal

Mike Shaughnessy, SFS founding principal, approaches the planning and design of each project as a blank slate, without preconceived solutions. His commitment to quality and talent for recognizing and responding to the unique aspects of each situation has allowed him to design facilities that truly respond to user needs and provide an ongoing, positive experience. His projects have received numerous AIA design excellence awards; Mike’s own favorites are those structures that are “enjoyable spaces to be in again and again…even after returning many times over.” Man cannot live solely on professional achievement, however: Mike also enjoys golf, coffee, and his uncanny ability to locate food in the office before Kerry Newman absconds with it.

Bill Scott

Founding Principal

Success is in the details, and no one recognizes this better than Bill Scott. A founding partner of SFS, Bill has devoted his 40-year career to public architecture and takes pride in the wide range of civic spaces the firm has designed throughout Kansas City. As principal-in-charge of many public projects, Bill has provided oversight on all phases, from planning through design and construction, with an emphasis on materials, scale and natural light. Bill’s commitment to his clients is evident in the many relationships that have spanned multiple projects. When not connecting with past, current and future clients, Bill’s can be found spending time with family and friends. His favorite aspect of SFS – other than its longevity – is “participating in the collaborative culture through the development of creative environments.”

Kerry Newman

Principal

Public architecture has been the focus of Kerry Newman’s nearly 30-year career, and it shows in his designs: facilities that emphasize end-user experience and integrate sustainable design principles to provide greatest lifetime value for the community. Municipal and federal government clients know Kerry for his sincerity, exceptional service, and expertise in informing local stakeholders to enhance project outcomes. Lesser known are his love of running on Kansas City’s many trails, experience as a competitive swim official, and possession of a lucky tie. His approach to providing innovative, high-quality public architecture, from local recreation centers to federal courthouses, is evident in his definition of initiative as simply “noticing what needs to be done, and then doing it.”

Throughout her 30+ years in the architecture industry, Marsha has combined her enthusiasm for consensus building and problem solving as a team leader on complex, high-profile projects. A self-professed critic who notices “everything” when entering a building, she brings this discerning eye to project management, ensuring that each design succeeds functionally, aesthetically and financially. Marsha is passionate about architectural sustainability in her capacity as a LEED accredited professional; growing up in and around the beautiful Kansas Flint Hills began her lifelong appreciation for preserving natural environments. A longtime area resident, she has been recognized for her contributions to the design community by Women in Design, Kansas City.

Design Director Mike Christianer believes that accomplishments aren’t singular, but accumulative. During his more than 35 years of architectural practice, his achievements have included the planning and design of diverse, award-winning projects that reflect his attention to detail and use of clean lines, natural light and varied materials to create distinctive, sustainable buildings that reflect each client’s needs and capture the imagination. Growing up in Cleveland with a metallurgist father, Mike developed an appreciation of metals and other materials.
