Campus-style public safety facility supports fire protection, training and police operations

    Challenge

Design a campus-style fire department facility to support the department’s public safety mission in a rapidly growing suburban community.

    Process

SFS collaborated with Lenexa fire department, EMS and police department personnel to create a new facility that would accommodate the functional and environmental needs of the fire and police department personnel occupying the completed campus.

    Solution

The three main functions of the new 31,000 SF facility are fire protection, training and police operations. The fire station includes living quarters for up to 10 fire fighters and EMS personnel, three drive through apparatus storage bays and fire fighter support. The training function of the station is broken into interior academic and exterior physical training. The police function includes command personnel offices, break room, toilet/showers for patrol officers and short-term holding for arrestees. The different functions unite around a central exterior entry plaza, which evokes imagery of the surrounding natural landscape within the context of a municipal function. Glazing provides views and provides natural light to illuminate and animate the space.
