    Overland Park, KS

Community college building design accommodates diverse academic programs.

    Challenge

Create a contemporary educational building for a major community college campus that can accommodate diverse academic programs while projecting a unified visual identity and comfortable environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors.

    Process

The SFS team collaborated with Johnson County Community College (JCCC) representatives and departmental directors to establish specific space, aesthetic and other requirements for each academic area.

    Solution

The 61,500 SF Arts & Technology Building houses fine arts, vocational technology and general classroom space for specialty programs including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, auto technology, metals and welding, construction and energy technology. The structure was organized along an interior pedestrian “street” and incorporated courtyards to allow natural daylight into the interior spaces. Classrooms are located at an intermediate level and serve as a buffer between the two main activities.
