Indian Trails Aquatic Center

Lenexa, KS

Aging family aquatic center renovated/redesigned with modern amenities, resort-like atmosphere

Challenge

Renovate and redesign an existing 1970s community pool to create a modern family aquatic center that offers great recreation amenities in a vibrant, resort-like setting.

Process

SFS led a participatory approach to planning and designing new aquatic elements and support features, continually coordinating with city staff, Parks and Recreation Department and Engineering Department personnel.

Solution

The family aquatic center is a rejuvenated destination for area residents. It includes a dual flume water slide, zero-depth and shallow constant-depth areas with water play features, and drop slides. A new bathhouse, shade structures, hard deck, sand play area, filter house, concession building, deck fountain and parking area were also added. These elements are placed to provide locations with individual senses of place and allow a merging of the pool facilities with the surrounding Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park.
