Design a courthouse lobby renovation to meet modern security standards and convey an appropriate image of the federal government judicial system.

Our team presented multiple design concepts for meeting security needs and design goals, using animated walkthroughs to clearly communicate the intended results of this extremely complex renovation. Due to the nature of each projects potential impact to security, visitor access, tenant agency access and general building operations implementation of invisible construction measures were necessary to minimize negative impact. Phasing and sequencing was studied to enable relocation of security systems, DHS observation areas, magnetometer and x-ray equipment with no lapse in security measures.

The redesigned entry lobby for the historic, 20-story Robert A. Young Federal Building now conveys a distinguished visual image in keeping with the federal government’s First Impressions Program. The lobby functions as the main entry and egress point for approximately 37 tenant agencies and controls access to important building services. Key design elements included incorporating security equipment and processes, clear definition of formal and informal lobby functions, security functions, energy efficiency and the ability to effectively phase and stage all construction activities.
