Liberty Park Family Aquatic Center
Family aquatic center design replaces outdated facility, provides specific amenities for all age groups
Design a new family aquatic center to replace an aging facility and create a top-notch recreation destination for local residents and visitors from neighboring communities.
The project team led extensive interviews and work sessions with key stakeholders including senior citizens groups, service organizations and youth groups, and a public forum generated enthusiasm and support. SFS also worked closely with Sedalia Parks and Recreation staff to prioritize program elements and manage budget and operational constraints.
The approved project included demolition of the existing pool, construction of six 25-meter competition lanes, two 1-meter diving boards, a zero-depth area with water play features, a water slide and plunge pool, a shade structure, grass decks, a bathhouse, concessions, a filter building and a new parking area. Total water surface area is 12,100 square feet. Users’ desire for night swimming led to the design of a unique up-lighted fabric structure supported by a concrete and steel mast, detailed to enable seasonable removal and create a glowing marker at night swims.
